Ratdog - Sunday February 9, 2003 @The House of Blues Anaheim
No More Wasserman, Just Another Rob

Since I gave up my tickets and list access for Saturday night's 4th and B show in San Diego to attend Johnny's birthday down in Venice Beach, I was looking forward to a Sunday night show (re:Samson). Plus the fact that the official word had come down that Other Ones had officially changed their name to the "Dead", I was interested to hear the buzz around the Heads at the show. Believe me, I had plenty of time to find out their opinion because of the wait in line to get into the House of Blues at Disneyland. Now I know that the nation was on/is on a "Orange" level of alert, but this was a bit ridiculous. We're talking about peaceful dead heads. Let's put it this way, the ride from my house to the venue was about 40 miles and took under an hour to get there. Well the wait was longer, much longer to get will call tickets then stand in line. I have to give the fans credit though, everyone waited patiently as we watched the Dog take the stage via the monitors they had in the outside bar. (You could see the monitors from outside in the line). Plus there was a dude playing his acoustic and singing the blues outside to make the time pass. Even Capt. McBean hung in there. On several different occasions, ol' McBean wanted to walk away and head back, but he pulled up his hip boots by their straps and played through like a true veteran. A lot of folks in line hadn't heard the news of the "Dead" yet and of course I was talking it up big time. The show itself was packed inside. You could not get downstairs as it was jammed to the gills. So we hung out upstairs. The view was very limited, it's the least amount of Bob Weir I had seen in a long time. But I did manage to get watch Rob Barraco play bass. He was fine. He's a musician and did not look out of place at all. Plus, he plays with Jeff Chimenti and Weir so often now that if there are mistakes, his co-horts pick them up and hide them. I for one did not miss Wasserman that much. He's off doing his own thing. He and Weir will be at the Marin Civic at the end of March for the Rex benefit show. I think he was just sick of touring and playing Dead music. In fact, I asked him in the summer of 2000 if the Other Ones had considered him as the bassist for their upcoming tour instead of Alphonso Johnson, he replied rather sarcastically, "I don't want to spend my fall playing the same Grateful Dead tunes over and over." I was like, "okay, sorry for asking." Wasserman also plays in Banyan more on that later. The show itself had it's usually Ratdog flavor, old Bob tunes a few classic Dead tunes. The 'Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance was great in the first set. I finally got my Wheel>Samson and Delilah and as they segued into Wharf Rat, Capt. McBean called the curfew because of work around 11:30. All in all, I missed some good stuff, I saw some good stuff. But this was just an appetizer of what was to come. - by Steve Itzkowitz
